How to Correctly Troubleshoot a BLDC Evaporator Fan Motor

In this dive into the real-life battles of appliance repair, we look at a KitchenAid fridge with a 3-wire BLDC evaporator fan motor.

The problem is that the fan doesn’t run with the fan blade attached. The tech said that if he removed the fan blade, the motor itself would run.

So what’s going on here? More importantly, what’s a quick test we can do during the service call to correctly diagnose whether it’s a bad fan motor or a bad computer board? Well, watch the video to find out.

This is a good example of knowing your circuits and your inputs and outputs. Sure, the fan motor seemed bad at first, but was it?

Understanding circuits and knowing when and where to jumper can help you to determine which parts are actually bad. These skills are what separate the PCMs from the real techs.

We teach you circuits, electrical testing, how to read schematics and troubleshoot more intelligently and efficiently in our Core Appliance Repair Training course. Enroll today and begin your journey to Appliance Repair Mastery.
